Bumbershoot 2010: Day Two

It was perfect Bumbershoot weather for the second day of the three-day music and arts festival. The overcast morning gave way to a nicer afternoon, but the sun stayed mostly behind the clouds which meant it never got too hot and there was no roasting in the sun while taking in the shows.
We started our day by taking in a set from Los Angeles rock radio faves Crash Kings, who drew a large crowd to one of the festival’s many outdoor stages. The band is made up of two brothers and a drummer. This is Tony Beliveau. He plays an organ with a whammy bar.

This is his brother Mike. Can see the family resemblance in the way the veins on their neck pop out when they sing?

This is Jason. He’s neither a Beliveau nor a singer.

Somewhere between The Gossip and Tegan and Sara is The Redwood Plan, led by the downright adorable Lesli Wood.

Ms. Wood, who used to lead Ms. Led, is basically an American Apparel model with a new wave haircut trapped in the body of the Energizer bunny.

David Bazan, the creative force behind Pedro the Lion, played his tuneful brand of indie rock under the watchful gaze of the Space Needle. He has to close his eyes when he sings so as to not get them poked out by his angry unclipped guitar strings.

If you’ve been wondering what happened to ’70s icon Grizzly Adams, wonder no more. He’s playing wicked guitar alongside David Bazan.

New Jersey’s Bouncing Souls have been playing anthemic punk rock for 20 years now. Is it just us or does singer Greg Attonito totally look like a smarmy game show host in this shot?

The Souls’ Bryan Kienlen makes bass face.

During the second song, Attonito gets friendly with the fans up front … and the photographers.

No, this isn’t the cast of the next season of “Top Chef,” it’s actually the people collected on the side of the stage during the Souls’ set.

Souls guitarist Pete Steinkopf has a four button limit on his guitar strap.

Ra Ra Riot are from Syracuse, New York. You know who else is from Syracuse? Bobcat Goldthwait. Why are we telling you this? No good reason.

Black cardigans and blond Telecasters go together like chocolate and peanut butter.

The band’s sexy cellist and sexy violin player — Alexandra Lawn and Rebecca Zeller — gave all the fanboys in the audience a major bow-ner.

Do you think Motion City Soundtrack singer-guitar player Justin Pierre actually knew that a bumbershoot was a colloquialism for umbrella or did he just get lucky when he got dressed this a.m.? Do you think Motion City Soundtrack singer-guitar player Justin Pierre knows what a colloquialism is?

Fences is the latest musical project from Christopher Mansfield, who may look like he should be in Rancid, but whose latest band sounds more like Red House Painters.

Mansfield also has some sick tattoos. And also a S-I-C-K tattoo.

Sadly, we missed Billy Bragg, who we really wanted to see (we were busy looking for a new England), and also Courtney’s Hole and Weezer. But we did get to see a dude projectile vomit purple barf all over the parking lot, so that’s awesome.
