Give ‘Em The Business

Like the old saying goes, there’s no business like show business, and few outlets cover the business of show as thoroughly and as engagingly as “The Business.” A production of Los Angeles-based public radio station KCRW, the weekly show, which is syndicated to a handful of stations, and also available as a podcast, has been peeling the curtain back on the entertainment industry since 2004, and its insider insights are the charming, better-looking cousin to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily.

Claude Brodesser-Akner, an Ad Age writer, presided over the show for many years, but after a comment about California’s gay marriage proposition and the Hollywood Blacklist, he was let go from the station, and subsequently from the show. New host Kim Masters, a reporter for Slate, The Daily Beast and The Wall Street Journal, is equally informed and gives the show the gravitas it needs to survive in the town it feeds off of. Each broadcast generally starts off with a roundup of the latest industry news before segueing into in-depth discussions with folks from all areas of the entertainment business. Whether it’s “Medium” creator Glenn Caron talking frankly about the politics of his show’s move from NBC to CBS, AMPAS President Sid Ganis explaining why the Academy decided to chose 10 best picture nominees this year, or a shrink-to-the-stars discussing the psychological perils of being famous, the guests are nearly always insightful, and for those of us who don’t chew the fat with industry bigwigs on a regular basis, “The Business” provides a recurring invitation to one of Hollywood’s coolest parties. Even better, there’s no paparazzi outside, no valet charge, and you’ll never get thrown out for doing coke in the bathroom with Ben Silverman.
