‘Ink’ Stains
“LA Ink” season 1 volume 1 is out now on DVD, and aside from some cheaply-produced one-on-one interviews with each of the show’s stars, there’s nothing special to make this collection purchase-worthy.
Sure, you get all 13 episodes of the first season — which are solidly entertaining — but really, that’s all you get. Oh, except for the three temporary tattoos that come with it which are kinda cool.
While it may not make sense to have a director or cast member providing a commentary track to a reality TV show, there are still a bunch of missed opportunities on this collection, and all things considered, you’d be just as well off simply downloading the episodes from iTunes or Amazon. Here are some suggestions for how Genius/TLC could have made this DVD set better:
The decision to not include more extras with the set may have been one of pure economics. Perhaps TLC simply doesn’t sell enough of these sets to warrant producing extra pieces of content, but most of the suggestions above would require little more than some additional editing time. And though “The Sopranos” this ain’t, we can’t but think the show’s loyal fans wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to get an inside look at what goes on at the shop when the cameras aren’t rolling.
Unlike say, “The Hills,” which creates a barrier between its stars and audience, part of the charm of “LA Ink” is that the artists on the show come off as regular Janes (and Joe), but failing to show us anything about their lives or personalities other than what is filtered through into the episodes only serves to widen the chasm between show and fan.
Here’s a three-minute clip from season one featuring Bam Margera getting a new piece from Kat:
