Warped Tour Tramples the West Coast

L.A. Times: “Plenty of young side-stage acts were worth the gas prices to go there, but if this year’s attendance figures were telling (down to 16,000 from 20,000 last year), it might behoove Warped’s bookers to rethink what constitutes punk rock’s elite in 2008.” | Source

The Daily Californian: “The Warped Tour is a strange combination of progressive politics and corporate sponsorship. It oftentimes resembles an outdoor mall, but it was founded as an outlet for all kinds of dramatic, soaring pop punk. It is intense and goofy, a musical version of puberty.” | Source

El Paso Times: “I dropped in for about 3 hours in the afternoon and caught all or parts of a dozen acts. Standouts included Against Me!, the Florida foursome that made the most of its half hour on the Highway 1 stage. Singer-guitarist Tom Gabel and crew pounded out eight songs in the kind of torrid, emphatic fashion one would expect from a band that brings a Clash-like sophistication and conviction to its songs about social ills and calls to action.” | Source

The Salt Lake Tribune: “Keeping healthy was key for the bands as well as the fans. Animo’s lead singer, Schuyler Ankele, said he forces himself to drink two gallons every day. Jesse Wagner from the Aggrolites and Derek Sanders from Mayday Parade said hanging out in their air-conditioned RVs and tour buses were saving their lives.” | Source

Las Cruces Sun-News: “The best advice for Warped virgins is, bring sunscreen and money for Gatorade. Expect to make friends with people you wouldn’t have expected to and maybe even meet some famous dudes. The tour has changed quite a bit from the mohawks and safety pins. It now accommodates a more diverse crowd, but it still has clung to its respectable roots.” | Source
