Stellar Stoner TV: ‘Unbeatable Banzuke’
Looking to fill the stoner TV doldrums left by reruns of “Jackass” and “MXC?” Then look no further than “Unbeatable Banzuke,” the Americanized version of “Kinniku Banzuke,” a twisted talent/daredevil game show mashup that ran in Japan from 1995 to 2002, and that has recently debuted on G4. With the original hosts stripped from the American version and the original commentary intact (via subtitles), the show is essentially a compilation of competitions with no clear prize or structure in place other than, um, beating Banzuke. Which on occasion we do get to see. Competitions include twisted variations on unicycling, stilt walking, and various other feats of extreme athleticism. Though the show was a hit in Japan, it was canceled suddenly after two contestants were seriously injured during a taping.
