A (Not So) Complete History of the “Punk Goes…” Compilation Series

With news that Fearless Records will release “Punk Goes Crunk” later this year, the 7th volume in their “Punk Goes…” series, we thought we’d take a look — and listen — to the previous installments. Most of the “Punk Goes…” compilations have found pop punk bands covering songs in specific genres or specific decades, with a few volumes changing up the format to focus on acoustic versions of normally non-acoustic tracks (though the rise of emo seems to sort of make this concept moot). The upcoming “Crunk” version of the series was culled from material from a never released album put together by Immortal Records featuring tracks by Say Anything, New Found Glory and Hot Rod Circuit. The album will be out April 8th. In the meantime, here’s a look at its predecessors.

Punk Goes: Acoustic 2
Released: 5/8/2007
Notable bands: +44, Say Anything, Anti-Flag
Bands covered: None, this volume focuses on acoustic re-workings of songs by the artists on the compilation.
Aversion says: “Mostly a collection of tracks by bands who take themselves far, far too seriously or outfits who throw on pianos and extras in a transparent attempt to dress up the shortcomings of their acoustic-based songwriting.”
Mp3: Anti-Flag - “Welcome to 1984 (Acoustic)”

Punk Goes: 90s
Released: 5/9/2006
Notable bands: Plain White T’s, Copeland, Gym Class Heroes
Bands covered: Soundgarden, Oasis, Alanis Morrisette
EmotionalPunk says: “The hits far outweigh the misses.”

Punk Goes: 80s
Released: 7/5/2005

Mp3: Relient K - “Manic Monday”

Punk Goes: Acoustic
Released: 10/21/2003
Notable bands: Thrice, Strung Out, Ataris
Bands covered: None. Like its sequel, this record finds bands doing acoustic versions of their normally non-acoustic songs.
Sound the Sirens says: “The album starts out strong, and then tends to lag towards the end.”
Mp3: Rise Against - “Swing Life Away”

Punk Goes: Pop
Released: 4/3/2001
Notable bands: Thrice, Yellowcard, The Starting Line
Bands covered: Backstreet Boys, Madonna, Belinda Carlisle

Punk Goes: Metal
