Billboard Hackers

In this modern world of ours, where the square footage of public advertising is increasing every day, and where product placements fill our TV screens, iPods and websites (this one included), its no wonder there are fed-up consumers ready and willing to publicly voice their disdain with public advertising.

Some statements are rather unsophisticated.

Others, more personal.

And some have a terrific sense of humor.

Artist Ron English made an art form of billboard “liberation,” though he created his own ads rather then defacing others. Cigarette companies are a favorite target of his.

Oil companies too.

And ever the family man, even his kids make an appearance in some of his work.

But the latest culture jammer is known only as The Decapitator. His/her ads have been showing up all over London lately. They’re easy to spot: The subjects have no heads.

The work is simple yet alluring.

And despite their over the top graphics, The Decapitator’s hacks manage to convey the bloody grotesqueness of being advertised at from all directions at once. It’s kind of enough to make your head explode.

Check out more of Ron English’s work on his website. And see the full set of The Decapitator’s work on Flickr.
