The Naked Truth About Sex in Film

Like a delicious Reese’s peanut butter cup, a new four-part IFC mini-series combines two things we love: Indie film and sex. “Indie Sex,” directed by Lisa Ades and Lesli Klainberg, chronicles the (ahem) rise of sexuality in independent cinema in four seventy-five minute chunks, tackling the topics of censorship, taboos, teens and extremes.
Hosted by retro pinup queen Dita Von Teese, the series features interviews with tons of directors, actors, and critics including John Cameron Mitchell (”Hedwig and the Angry Inch”), Peter Sarsgaard (”Kinsey”) and Tatum O’Neal (”Little Darlings”). Though less essential than the rise-of-the-auteurs doc “Easy Riders, Raging Bulls,” “Indie Sex” utilizes a similar approach to tell its story, and between the talking heads and lame-o pop culture timelines are a ton of great moments from a ton of great films, many of which will inspire you to add the ones you haven’t yet seen to your Netflix queue. And while the film isn’t simply a good excuse to examine the titillating parts of low budget movies, it is filled with plenty of tits, ass, and wiener (just how many times can Harvey show his Keitel anyway?). From “Deep Throat” to “Showgirls,” sex is an important and lasting part of American cinema, and this documentary proves the subject is worthy of being laid bare and explored.
Check the IFC schedule to find out when the film airs again next.
