Straight Outta Tyler

Hi, we're from Tyler, Texas
The East Texas town of Tyler isn’t the most famous outpost in the Lone Star State. In fact, it likely isn’t even in the top ten. But between a new record from Eisley and a new reality show from Fox, it just may be the birthplace of a American’s latest cultural revolution. OK, probably not, but still, it’s pretty great for a small time Texas town to get some big time cultural attention twice in the same year, let alone twice in the same month (go Wildcatters!).

Known as the Rose Capital of America due to its major rose production, the city has boasted a couple notable Tylerites over the years including hall of fame NFL running back Earl Campbell, matriarch of “The Hogan FamilySandy Duncan, Dooley “Sam” Wilson from “Casablanca,” and Ken Bethea of the Old 97s.

But the city’s most famous musical exports may just be Eisley, a four-siblings-and-their-cousin indie pop band who are about to release their second album “Combinations” on August 14th. The band built a solid following with their major label debut, but seem poised to breakthrough with their second offering.

See their video for the album’s first single “Invasion,” which according to singer Sherri DuPree is based on “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”:

You can also win an acoustic guitar courtesy of the band by entering here.

On August 22nd, Fox will debut “Anchorwoman,” a new reality series that follows former WWE Diva and recent Barker Beauty Lauren Jones as she relocates to Tyler, Texas to anchor the evening newscast for KTYX. The station has sagging ratings and despite Jones’ lack of experience, the station hopes her presence will help them whoop their competitors in the coming ratings period. It also doesn’t hurt that nothing on Ms. Jones is sagging.

And for those of you seeking a hotspot for your next vacation, consider the Texas Rose Festival. We hear its like Mardi Gras, only crazier.
