Don’t Call It A Comeback

Hi there. Sorry for the delay. The staff of YuppiePunk World HQ has been relatively all-consumed for the past couple weeks, but with our previous obligations now behind us, we’re free to get back to our normal irregular posting schedule. Hey, it could be worse. At least we reappeared before Axl Rose released “Chinese Democracy.” Here are some other notable hiatuses:
The band Boston took 8 years between “Don’t Look Back” and “Third Stage.” Ditto Sean Lennon between his two solo albums. Buffalo Tom just released a new record after nine years. And Kate Bush let 12 years elapse between records before releasing “Aerial” in 2005.
“Hiatus” is the name of the season finale of the first season of the excellent “30 Rock.”
Quentin Tarantino may have waited 6 years between “Jackie Brown” and the first installment of “Kill Bill,” but he ain’t got nothing on Terence Malick who laid low for 20 years in between 1978’s “Days of Heaven” and 1998’s “The Thin Red Line,” which was nominated for 7 Academy Awards.
It took “The Sopranos” 21 months to get back on the air between seasons 5 and 6, but Seth McFarlane’s “Family Guy” has got that break beat. The last episode of season 3 aired in early 2002, but it wasn’t until May 1, 2005 that the subsequent season officially began. In the interim, the show was officially canceled by FOX, then brought back after unusually high viewership on cable and strong DVD sales.
When Jane Fonda appeared in “Monster in Law” with Jennifer Lopez in 2005, it was the first film she’d starred in in 14 years.
Postmodern author Thomas Pynchon released novels 17 years apart. His “Gravity’s Rainbow” came out in 1973, and it wasn’t until 1990 that he released the follow-up, “Vineland.” And here’s to hoping the reclusive J.D. Salinger will someday beat that record. His last (and only) novel was released in 1965, the seminal “Catcher in the Rye.” That’s 40 plus years and counting…
