The Topps card company has just released a new series of trading cards called Hollywood Zombies that make us totally nostalgic for the bygone days of the Garbage Pail Kids (movie, anyone?). The cards, which re-imagine our favorite celebs as members of the undead, were put together by a number of today’s top illustrators and come complete with a tabloid-style story on the back. Celebs range from the obvious (Paris Hellton, Britney Speared) to the more sublime (Sanjaya Malakarcass), but the sheer joy of the cards is their playfulness, even down to the series’ tagline: They’re rich. They’re famous. They’re dead!

In the same way that Garbage Pail Kids re-imagined the dark side of the Cabbage Patch phenomenon in the ’80s, the Hollywood Zombies series pokes fun at our country’s current celebrity obsession in a family-friendly Mad Magazine kind of way, which is a nice respite to the mean-spirited Perez Hilton approach. The detailed illustrations on the cards are great too, with each background providing as much to look at as the zombified celebs in the foreground. There are 72 cards in all, but the thing we really want to know is, do the packs still come with the undead stick of gum?
