An almost-fight on this week’s episode of MTV’s “The Hills” reminded us of just how dead-on a portrait of Los Angeles the movie “Swingers” is. Not only does the film nail the zeitgeist of a particular subculture, but also the city it’s set in. Watching this scene from “The Hills” made us think of the scene in “Swingers” where Jon Favreau and his not-tough acting buddies get into a beef with a group of much-tougher Angelinos in the parking lot behind the Dresden. In the MTV version, the not-even-remotely-tough Spencer picks a fight with Heidi’s co-worker Max and gets called a tool, to which he cleverly responds, “Do you think you can just call somebody a tool in L.A.?” Um, sure looks like it dude. Max flips Spencer the bird and casually strolls on leaving the over-inflated rich kid all kinds of humiliated. Moments like this one are why reality TV can sometimes be so satisfying.
