Selections from the Vault: The Letter “J”

Occasionally we like to lock ourselves in the record room at YuppiePunk World HQ, dump out an entire shelf of CDs, pop them from their jewel cases and rub their hard, shiny plastic all over our hairy body. Their fans flipped out when they signed to the majors, but this record rules.
A great Jawbreaker compilation track about a ‘63 Plymouth Valiant.

J Church – “Alone When She Dies”
The train they’re named after runs through San Francisco.

Jets to Brazil – “Further North”
Blake Schwarzenbach really seems to like band names that start with J. And also songs that are both beautiful and sad.

Josh Joplin Group – “Happy At Last”
Littered with pop culture references, this is Elvis Costello-influenced power pop.

The Jayhawks – “Waiting for the Sun”
This is the song that turned us on to alt country. What a voice on Gary Louris.
Assembled from the ashes of Knapsack, these guys released one of 2003’s best records and then promptly disappeared.

The Jesus Lizard – “And Then The Rain”
Dark and creepy and just this side of normal.
