YuppiePunk | Aperture Music Podcast #4: Bands Named After Cities

Welcome to another podcast. As usual, the songs were put together by the fine folks at Aperture Music, who have just finished up their work on “Jackass: Number 2,” which we are totally looking forward to seeing (and we’re not just saying that). The theme for this edition is artists that are named after citites. There are a zillion choices for sure, so this is by no means a complete list. We could likely put together a dozen podcasts on this theme alone, but in hopes of not blowing up your iPods, we tried to focus on some notable songs by some notable artists. Feel free to leave your alternate suggestions in the comments. You can download each of the songs ala carte until they expire, or even better, subscribe to our podcast (which never expires) by clicking the orange button at the bottom of the post. Enjoy!
Calexico – “Corona”
This Calexico cover of the Minutemen’s “Corona” (a.k.a. the “Jackass” theme song) was nearly included in the opening for “Jackass: Number Two,” but was replaced at the last minute with an old Ennio Morricone piece. Perhaps it will rear its ugly head in “Jackass 3.”

Phoenix – “Rally”
Before Sofia Coppola went and made these Frenchies the hippest band in the land by having singer Thomas Mars’ baby, Jack Black danced along to the band in the film “Shallow Hal.”

Chicago – “If You Leave Me Now”
Originally called Chicago Transit Authority, these soft rockers shortened their name when the real CTA threatened to sue. This song, from their 1976 album “Chicago X,” was their first number one hit, as well as their only Grammy-winning track. It is also used to great effect in David O. Russell’s film “Three Kings.”

Earlimart – “1st Instance / Last Resort”
Named for a town between Fresno and their native Los Angeles, the band’s singer Aaron Espinoza has a strikingly similar voice to Elliott Smith.

New York Dolls – “Personality Crisis”
The first song on the first side of the first album from NYC’s New York Dolls is classic rock & roll –- loud, sexy and snotty.

Of Montreal – “My British Tour Diary”
Kevin Barnes named his Athens, Georgia band Of Montreal after a failed relationship with a woman from that city.

L.A. Guns – “Sex Action”
Though the band hailed from Los Angeles and once included Axl Rose on vocals, a Brit named Philip Lewis sang on all the band’s hits. These days, there are two bands using the moniker –- one featuring Lewis on vocals, the other, Traci Guns on guitar.

Atlanta Rhythm Section – “I’m So Into You”
If you watch, or rather, listen to “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” very carefully, you can hear this song during the scene where Steve Carrell gets his toe sucked.

Boston – “Let Me Take You Home Tonight”
A song from one of the all-time great guilty pleasures, this is the closing track on Boston’s self-titled debut which has sold an astonishing 17 million copies.

Sparta – “While Oceana Sleeps”
The ancient Greek city this band is named after is a long way from their hometown of El Paso, Texas, but their fierce and melodic post-hardcore knows no boundaries.

Paris Hilton – “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”
Um, this is rhetorical, right?
