Rally ‘Round the Flagg

Zachary Flagg Baldus is an amazing illustrator. He’s a member of Meathaus, a comics collective that grew out of New York’s School of Visual Arts, the largest independent undergraduate art college in the United States.

Baldus primarily draws portraits, which are both photorealistic and surreal at the same time, much like the work of Eric White. Along with his work for Meathaus, Baldus has done quite a bit of work for Insight magazine. Despite the commerciality of his magazine work, his illustrations maintain a deeply personal quality that never overshadows the subtle emotions beneath his subjects’ eyes. His drawings rarely have backgrounds, but rather, broad strokes of bold colors, which allows viewers to focus intently on the subjects without being distracted.

He’s done book and album covers too, but we’re partial to his personal work. This wedding present is gorgeous, and this portrait of the Hulk with his nephews is amongst his more humorous pieces. You can see much more from Zachary Flagg Baldus on his website. Or click the thumbnails below for the full-size images.
