Must Love John
John Cusack is one of our most versatile actors. This notion struck us as we watched the trailer for his latest film “Must Love Dogs,” a romantic comedy co-starring Diane Lane. Cusack’s done romance before (”Serendipity”), but he’s also done straight comedy (”Tape Heads”), suspense (”The Grifters”) and drama (”Being John Malkovich”). His career has truly run the gamut. He’s done action flicks (”Con Air”), worked with the masters (”The Thin Red Line,” “Bullets Over Broadway”), made fluffy teen faire (”One Crazy Summer”), has written films (”Grosse Point Blank”), and even produced them (”Max”).
Much of his versatility as an actor comes from the fact that he’s just so darn likable. He’s got an everyman demeanor that resonates with filmgoers of all genres. And despite the fact that he doesn’t sit atop the Hollywood A-list of leading men, he’s worked steadily since his teens, racking up a slew of memorable films. More refreshing still, he remains scandal-free. When was the last time you heard someone gossiping about who John Cusack was sleeping with? Or perhaps his likeability stems from his many classic roles, particularly as Lloyd Dobler in “Say Anything,” a kickboxing underdog who finally lands the popular girl, then loses her. Here’s a look at our 10 favorite Cusack flicks in reverse order:
“Better Off Dead” (1985)
“Identity” (2003)
“Bullets Over Broadway” (1994)
“Grosse Point Blank” (1997)
“The Grifters” (1990)
“The Sure Thing” (1985)
“The Thin Red Line” (1998)
“High Fidelity” (2000)
“Being John Malkovich” (1999)
“Say Anything” (1989)
And if all that’s not enough, find out which John Cusack you are here. We’re Lloyd Dobler. Shocker.
