Laughing at Reality TV Stars Is Fun!
VH1 has a new reality show called “BSTV.” It’s one of those reality shows with a twist ala “Joe Millionaire,” “Invasion Iowa” or “My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss.” And who better for the show to poke fun at than D-list celebs and former reality show cast members like Jared “The Subway Fat Guy” Fogel, Jenna “I released my own sex tape” Lewis and Leif “I nearly killed my best friend” Garrett.
The concept is simple: Showcase the kinds of outrageous things people will do to to either extend their fame (D-list celebs) or get cast on reality TV (regular Joes and Janes). And since VH1 has been betting heavily on programming both reality and nostalgia, this kind of hybrid seems perfect. But does it work? Sometimes. It’s not hard to believe that people will completely humiliate themselves for the chance to appear on TV. Nor is it hard to laugh at the everyday goofs longing for the chance to become a TV star. What is hard to believe however is that some of the celebs featured actually seem keen on the ridiculous ideas pitched to them. It just doesn’t seem plausible that someone would agree to do a reality show featuring a nanny armed with a Smith & Wesson. Ditto a show where two newborn babies are swapped at birth and not returned… for ten years.
The only celeb who seems to think that “BSTV” might be actual bullshit is ex-underage pornstar Tracy Lords, who walks off the set of the faux advice show she’s guesting on when the shrink continuously offers really awful advice. Overall the show contains enough amusing moments to warrant a viewing, but does it have the makings of a hit? Probably not. You can preview some of the gags on the show’s official site.
