Soul Crushing to the Weak of Spirit
“Wonder Showzen” is a delightfully bizarre “kids” show on MTV2 that you’ve likely never seen anything like. You are alerted to the show’s subversive nature right from the get go. The pre-show warning reads: “Wonder Showzen contains offensive, dispicable content that is too controversial and too awesome for actual children. The stark, ugly, profound truths Wonder Showzen exposes may be soul crushing to the weak of spirit. If you allow a child to watch this show, you are a bad parent or guardian.” Indeed.
The show is sort of a cross between “Sesame Street,” Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and “The Dinah Shore Portal from Hell,” and its pace is manic, with each segment lasting maybe two minutes or less. In one, a Grover-like puppet chases joggers through a park espousing Jesus (see that clip here). Another titled, “Beat Kids,” follows a nine year-old at a racetrack as he taunts the track’s gamblers. To an elderly gentlemen he asks: “Wanna see my impression of you? Gamble, gamble, gamble, gamble, die!” And there’s also a musical undercurrent to the show. One recent segment found a group of children in front of a green screen dancing to a They Might Be Giants-esque pop gem with the lyrics, “Slaves! Built the pyramids! Slaves! Built the Parthenon! Slaves! Built America! Slaves! This is your song.”
The show was originally called “Kids Show” (you can see the entire pilot episode here) and was slated to run on the much tamer USA Network. When the network backed out, MTV2 stepped in. The show is actually prety hard to describe, so your best bet is to watch for yourself when it airs on MTV2 — Fridays at 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT. Oh, and smoking a big fat blunt won’t likely hinder your enjoyment of it either.
