Cruiserweight: A Total Knockout
We know pop punk isn’t cool (thanks Yellowcard), but a couple times a year we stumble upon a band in the genre we kinda fall for. Our most recent discovery comes courtesy of the fine folks at Doghouse Records who have just released “Sweet Weaponry” from Cruiserweight, a peppy, female-fronted quartet from Austin, Texas. The album is the band’s third release, but first for Doghouse, and it may just be the best chick-fronted pop punk record since Tilt’s “‘Til it Kills.” Most of the album’s 13 tracks move nicely through pop punk and emo territory, though the band aren’t as sunny as say, Dance Hall Crashers, nor as fiery as Coheed and Cambria. The band is led by Stella Maxwell, who’s sweet voice and introspective lyrics elevate the band above most of their pop punk peers. Filling out the band are two additional Maxwell siblings, brothers Urny and Yogi, along with their good friend Dave, though its hard to imagine any of these songs without Ms. Maxwell’s infectious energy. Why aren’t there more XX chromosomal bands in this genre? If you’re still not convinced, you can download their song “This Ain’t No Beach Party” here and decide for yourself whether Cruiserweight are a knockout or a flop.
