The Dinah Shore Portal to Hell

Over the holidays, we visited our best friend Benny who always has terrific taste in humiliating entertainment. On this particular Friday evening, Benny pulled from his archives an amazing video called, “The Dinah Shore Portal to Hell.” The DVD, which is released by a great site called 5 Minutes to Live, is essentially a compilation of the most embarrassing celebrity musical performances from Dinah Shore’s old school TV chat show. And we use the word “musical” pretty loosely here. We’re not sure Herve Villechaize’s warblings actually qualify as music. Other lowlights: David Carradine getting REALLY into Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” and ex-baller-turned-broadcaster Terry Bradshaw crooning the 1970’s top hits. But even better than the Dinah Shore performances are the extras included on the DVD: Movie critics Siskel and Ebert in a non-stop cavalcade of insults (Ebert is the far superior sparer), James Brown on a Los Angeles morning show whacked completely out of his skull on PCP (“Ted Turner, where you at? Heyyyy!”), Richard Pryor in a sweaty, cocaine-fueled tirade on the set of “Stir Crazy,” and an almost unwatchable video made for pre-pubescent girls with Down Syndrome on how to use a menstrual pad. You can buy the video here.
